About Salta
One of Argentina's most historic and traditional cities, Salta is
located in the country's Northwest comer, nestled at 1,200
meters above sea level (just below 4,000 feet) at the bottom
of the massive Andean mountain range. Founded back in
1582, Salta still keeps its colonial architectural style within its
historic downtown.
Salta is a medium-size city with a thriving
cultural life and tourist industry. Home to two universities,
several museums and cultural centers, Salta boasts its own
renowned symphonic orchestra and busy artistic and cultural
calendar.
Salta is also home to some of Argentina's most wellknown
and loved folklore artists and to some of the best
cuisine, including the "empanada salteña"(known
throughout Argentina as "Salteñitas"), locro (a thick corn
and pumpkin soup), and humitas (grated or ground fresh corn
in a husk).
